Laptop lids have got thinner every year and webcam covers have not all kept up. Under 0.03 inches is the practical ceiling
Most current ultrabooks tolerate a cover up to about 0.03 inches without any change in how the lid sits. Thicker covers are fine on older or larger machines with a deeper bezel. If you are unsure, measure the gap between the closed lid and the keyboard deck with a piece of paper – if a folded sheet fits, so will a thin cover.
Metal slides last, plastic slides are quieter
Aluminium covers are thinner for the same rigidity and survive being opened thousands of times. Moulded plastic ones are softer against a screen and cost less. Neither is wrong; the choice is mostly about whether the machine spends its life closed in a bag or open on a desk.
Check where the indicator light is
Some covers are wide enough to sit over the activity LED as well as the lens. That is harmless but it removes a useful signal. If you rely on the light to know when the camera is live, choose a cover sized to the lens alone.
