Background contrast is doing half the work
A plain wall behind you lets the camera expose for your face. A window or a bright lamp behind you forces it to choose, and it will choose wrongly. Moving so that the brightest thing in frame is in front of you rather than behind is a one-time adjustment with a permanent payoff.
